The Running Owl is a comic character I created for a private project. It’s supposed to look happy, colorful and fast. It was my first real exercise in character design. The drawings were done as a birthday present for a runner who likes owls.
I started with some quick pen sketches in order to define the anatomy of the character. After that I dealt with perspective and different facial expressions. After realizing that it would look best if the character would run towards the viewer, I refined the final drawing over several steps. Leaving out the legs made it a lot easier to create a pleasing shape.
The drawing has been well received by the recipient – although I was told that owls are not that popular anymore. Obviously, it’s time to find a new animal for the next exercise.
